Creating a Project Management Center of Excellence to Enable Project Success

The federal government needs a centralized location, both physical and virtual, where agencies can capitalize on the expertise of current and future government project managers. The fact that the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has developed a draft document outlining a new project management job classification represents a tremendous stride for the government. It acknowledges that project management is a real and important career discipline. With an estimated 50 percent of the federal workforce eligible for retirement in 2005, an initiative to develop and retain qualified project managers is crucial. A solution to this impending crisis is to establish a Project Management (PM) Center of Excellence at the federal government enterprise level. The specific charter of this organization would be to support the development and institutionalization of consistent project management competencies across all federal government agencies.
