Harnessing Program Management to Empower State and Local Governments
Situation: the district of columbia department of
employment services, a provider of work-related
services to city residents, was faced with a hard
deadline to manage several interdependent projects,
including mainframe application rewrites
and migration of data centers. With the help of
an outside program management consultant, the
city was able to successfully manage the rewrites
and migration to completion.
Situation: the michigan department of transportation
was required to redesign its business processes
to meet increased federal requirements
and deliver more products with fewer employees.
Mdot’s goal was to let 90 percent of its projects
each fiscal year during the first two quarters.
With the help of an outside program management
consultant, the state now has the ability to monitor
progress toward that goal and make changes
as needed to when specific projects are going
to be let. The state modeled its design process
using a pm application, which has enabled it to
do more with less.
