Lean—Eliminate the Fat from Your Processes

Worker-Oriented Process Improvement Methodology Yields Repeated Results

Lean. It's not just the result of the Atkins diet, Weight Watchers or Metabolife. Like dieting, however, it is about cutting fat— but in this case the fat is bulky organizational structures or unwieldy processes. It's about streamlining organizational processes and optimizing resources in order to enable faster production. In the manufacturing realm, lean creates energy by pushing business processes to become more efficient, effective, and competitive. Lean is a process improvement methodology without the intimidating mathematical equations of Six Sigma. Although it could be considered another "flavor of the month" continuous improvement tool like Six Sigma, Total Quality Management, or Theory of Constraints, lean deemphasizes the bureaucracy and politics often associated with business process change and refocuses on the people actually doing the work.
