Leaving a Legacy of Accessible Data

Eight years ago, every business was preparing and testing for Y2K. Years before, the standard procedure was to remove the leading “19” from year dates within operating systems, saving an astronomical amount of valuable calculation space. Companies are now facing another Y2K issue—legacy data. Permanent electronic business records housed on media tapes of various types represent years of an organization’s vital fi nancial, historical, and intellectual property. If any of the data is more than 3.5 years old, chances are good that the operating system or software application is no longer available or active.
