Getting Smart About the Talent Crisis
For the first time in history, the
federal government is faced with
the possibility of a mass exodus of long-time employees through retirement.
This topic has been in the
headlines for the last decade so it
is easy to dismiss it as old news.
Even the Government Accountability
Offi ce (GAO) hasn’t issued a government-
wide report on retirement
projections since April 2001 (GAO-
01-509). In addition, the Office of
Personnel Management’s (OPM)
website lists retirement projections
through fiscal year (FY) 2006—but
no further. So, the mass exodus
has not been as dramatic as most
people thought. That does not mean
it is not happening, it is just a little
more subtle. Almost any federal
manager will tell you that a large
percentage of his or her agency’s
workforce is comprised of mature
workers eligible to retire now or in
the very near future.
