Apollo 13 Astronaut to Deliver Keynote Address at Robbins-Gioia Symposium
August 2, 2005, Alexandria, VA—Robbins-Gioia LLC is pleased to announce that Ken Mattingly,
Apollo 13 astronaut and accomplished aerospace executive, will deliver the keynote address for the company-hosted
“Results Symposium: Best Practices in Program Management.” The symposium will take place on September 8–9 at
the Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C.
One of the real-life heroes of Apollo 13, veteran Apollo and space shuttle astronaut Ken Mattingly will share the
true story behind an inspiring example of crisis and program management. Mattingly was the command module pilot
(CMP) pulled from the flight at the last minute for medical reasons, only to spearhead the ground crew’s efforts
to save his fellow astronauts once their moon mission went terribly wrong. He will recount his training and
friendship with fellow Apollo 13 astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise, his shock when the mission
went awry, and his role in coordinating the ground crew’s frantic race against time to save them. He will bring
the story full circle with a look at the space program today and the emerging role of private industry in
satellite communications.
“Ken’s story illustrates program management at its best,” said Jim Leto, Robbins-Gioia president and CEO. “The
miracle of the Apollo 13 story was not the result of one person rising to the occasion, but thousands of people
coordinating their efforts to do the impossible.”
Robbins-Gioia is presenting the symposium in celebration of its 25 years of pioneering the program management
(PM) industry and its leadership of PM innovations and excellence. This senior-level networking event will
feature real-world executive insights from organizations such as the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Timken
Company, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Colonial Bank, the Transportation Security Administration, and many others.
